Our job is to bring out what is best in our clients’ companies. We do this primarily through two areas of services: First, we focus on Empowering Ethics as a source of strategic and cultural strength. By this, we mean that we draw on positive ethics to bring out the best in a company and open the gates of resilience, innovation, and growth. Second, we specialize in Business for Peace in which we apply positive ethics to pave the way for successful investments in fragile and conflict-affected regions. This can involve working with companies to investigate, mediate, and establish ventures that contribute to stability, prosperity, and peace in regions seeking to transition out of conflict.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - As we enter 2021, the world is facing challenges stacked upon challenges. The pandemic has filled our hospitals to capacity. Unemployment levels exceed those of the Great Recession. This requires that we stop a moment, put away all self-doubt, and recognize that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity in which communities everywhere are looking to business leaders to draw on untapped potential to create innovative solutions to build more prosperous, sustainable, and just societies.</image:title>
<image:caption>Periods of significant disruption necessitate leading under conditions of heightened uncertainty. When the familiar is overshadowed by the unknown, increased risk also brings increased opportunity. The defining moments of leadership occur when one does not have all the answers, and yet, indecisiveness is not an option. This is when leaders need to stand firmly on rock-solid values. Just Business is here to help businesses to find and act on those values not in a space of ideal abstraction, but in the individual context of a particular business. In such cases, the value of Empowering Ethics is clear in helping to place businesses on the solid groundwork needed for success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Empowering Ethics - Let’s refreshen our understanding of the place of ethics in business, beginning by distinguishing between negative and positive ethics.</image:title>
<image:caption>We see negative ethics as comprising the norms that inform us of what not to do, such as lying, cheating, stealing, and harming others. Positive ethics consists of the norms that are good to do, but not required, such as an unwavering commitment to truthfulness, respect for the equal dignity of all people, deep listening, cooperation, compassion, justice, generosity, trust, personal growth, courage, creativity, love, and peace. One might consider these to be either self-evident or naively idealistic. We refer to these and related norms as Empowering Ethics, and we hold that if organizations consciously adopt them, they will be transformative. Moreover, we believe that it has been the widespread organizational failure to embrace Empowering Ethics that has permitted the perpetuation of structural workplace injustices such as the discrimination that has long impeded the career advancement of women and minorities. JB is here to help businesses to reach new heights by opening their imaginations to the possibilities available to them when they embrace Empowering Ethics.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Empowering Ethics</image:title>
<image:caption>Empowering Ethics: Mapping, Mining, and Strategizing Our work in Empowering Ethics typically begins with Stakeholder Mapping to identify a company's stakeholders, their distinguishing characteristics, and connections to the company. It is inadequate, for example, to refer to employees as a stakeholder group, since, generally, there may be groups of employees with distinctive responsibilities, experiences, and interests that may lead them to have particular insights into the organization's strengths and weaknesses. This mapping process provides the framework for our subsequent work with a client. Stakeholder Mapping provides a framework for Stakeholder Mining, which refers to research within an organization’s ecosystem to uncover insights into opportunities for advancement, innovation, reform, and transformation. In this process, we seek the views of people at the heart of the organization as well as those on the periphery, those who feel they have a deep knowledge of the organization as well as those whose knowledge is limited or even indirect. Our aim is not only to understand what stakeholders feel about the organization but their perspectives on what it could be. Stakeholder mining provides the data for developing strategies that draw on insights from within the organization’s ecosystem — strategies that are organic and potentially revolutionary. Our goal is not to create strategies for our clients, but to discover them based on what emerges when we investigate widely and deeply the various perspectives of those connected to an organization.</image:caption>

<image:title>Business for Peace - In the Fragile States Index map to the left, the regions colored in shades of yellow, orange and red, represent those countries affected by varying degrees of fragility and conflict.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many of the less stable regions are also less developed. When companies invest there and share know-how, the positive impact can be enormous and long-lasting. The risks may be high, but when successful, so are the rewards. For more information see https://fragilestatesindex.org/.</image:caption>

<image:title>Business for Peace - Around the world, millions of people are ready to say goodbye to conflict and the poverty it brings.</image:title>
<image:caption>While many communities are ready to welcome investments that benefit both ordinary people and foreign investors, they may also be wary of the perils of false promises. It is always worth celebrating when the doors that were closed by conflict are opened through mutually beneficial investments. However, before venturing into fragile or unstable regions, would-be investors need an extra measure of research, communication, and mediation to enhance the chances of success. When investment is done right, former battlefields can become fertile grounds for new beginnings, prosperity, and growth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Foundational Research We start with foundational research to clarify the nature of the project, investor capacity, and relevant cultural and historical factors in the host community that could have a material impact on potential projects. Facilitation, Negotiations, and Mediation JB can serve as a third-party intermediary, facilitator, and/or mediator between investors and local stakeholders. Dealing with Challenges If local norms and customs lead to the kinds of unanticipated problems not seen in business textbooks, we work with companies to understand the factors at play and steps to take to resolve conflicts and achieve positive outcomes. Policy Guidance We gather knowledge from the field and translate it into actionable C-suite insights. We provide clients with guidance in crafting policies that support corporate interests that are also consistent with human rights, supportive of the UN Strategic Development Goals, and responsive to local safety and security concerns.</image:caption>
